Abstract
A volute-type casing is described, of the type for use with a centrifugal fan, a compressor or the like, and comprises a casing body defined by opposite side walls, a peripheral wall of the volute arranged between the side walls and defining, together with the latter and with an impeller, a chamber of the volute, and the side walls each having a generally minimum radial dimension located on a tongue of the volute chamber which gradually increases up to a maximum radial dimension located in an opening of the volute chamber. The side walls comprise first portions of the side walls which are generally parallel to each other between the tongue and zone of transition at 180 degrees from the latter, and second portions of the side walls of the zone of transition to the opening of the volute at about 360 degrees which diverge in a direction far from the transition zone such that fluid/air flowing through the casing body gradually expands axially outwards when it flows between and along the second portions. <IMAGE>
