Abstract

A gellable aqueous composition which can be used to modify the permeability of high permeability zones in oil fields, which contains water, an acrylamide polymer or copolymer, chromium III ion which has a cross-linking agent for the acrylamide (co)polymer, and malonic acid as a chelating agent for the chromium III ion, where the said chelating agent is present in a concentration of at least 0.05 M in the composition and the molar ratio between the said chelating agent and the cross-linking agent is equal to at least 10:1 is described. The composition is barely inclined to give up chromium III on contact with solids of varying porosity; it is capable of gelling with useful gelling times in environments at temperatures up to the order of 150 degree C, and it produces a gel which is highly resistant to syneresis at such high temperatures. <IMAGE>
