Abstract

The invention concerns a new way of preparing the mixture that makes up concrete as well as the way of obtaining it, adding to the active ingredients (water and cement) and the inert ingredients (sand, gravel and crushed aggregate) the ashes or dust collected to reduce smoke from steel mill furnaces, and where regulations dictate that the said ashes or dust must be disposed of being toxic, harmful and hence polluting. This procedure, whereby these ashes or dust are introduced along with the other components in the concrete mix, consists primarily of the manufacture of: products, i.e. concrete of better and more marked resistance to mechanical stress; more compact manufactured articles with greater long-term resistance, especially when compared with articles made from standard concretes currently in use; concretes made from mixtures that confer improved workability to the mix; mixtures that require drastically reduced quantities of water to be processed and used, thereby reducing drying times. Thanks to the aforementioned characteristics, in addition to generating all the related advantages, the concrete obtained in the specified procedure also generates a further, significant benefit: large quantities of harmful dust, which would otherwise be difficult and expensive to eliminate, can be disposed of from steel mills.
