Abstract

The recirculating circuit has the emitter of a control transistor (Tc) connected to the collector of the power switching transistor (Tpw). The collector of the control transistor and the base of the power switching transistor are commoned. In operation, interruption of the drive to the power switching transistor produces an overvoltage across the inductance (L) connected between the switching transistor collector and earth. An over-voltage of VBE turns on the control transistor which turns on the switching transistor. The control transistor withstands a minimum fraction (1/X) of the current which discharges the energy stored by the inductance, where X is the current gain of the control transistor.
