Abstract

The tread surface of a worn removable tread belt is replaced by removing the worn belt from its carcass, machining its worn tread surface to a cylindrical configuration, and bonding onto the machined surface a replacement tread. The replacement tread may be premoulded and bonded in place by a suitable adhesive under heat and pressure. The premoulded strip may be a single annular body or may be made up of a series of sections bonded end to end. Alternatively the replacement tread surface strip may be unmoulded and green and moulded and vulcanised into place upon the machined tread belt without the use of adhesive. By using a replacement tread surface strip the amt. of rubber, and hence the cost of retreading is reduced. The method is esp. useful with large tyres, e.g. those of earth working vehicles. Existing reinforcing plies can be reutilised.
