Abstract

The forward stabiliser or canard (2) of a supersonic aircraft is linked to the aircraft flying controls to improve control of the aircraft during landing and take-off. In these cases it produces a lifting force F2 to supplement the lifting force F1 of the main wing (1). The canard can be disconnected from the flying controls and allowed to 'float' so that it occupies a neutral attitude and has no effect on the aircraft. This enables the centre of pressure to be changed when passing from subsonic to supersonic speed.
