Abstract

In a treatment process to apply a prepn. to a porous substrate, such as a fabric, the prepn. is foamed to give a froth with a density of 0.005-0.3 g/cm3, and the foam is passed to an applicator jet. The substrate is passed continuously over and in contact with the applicator jet so that the foamed prepn. and the jet are moved together and the machine contact time is equal to or less than the equilibrium contact time. A present and controlled volume of foamed matter is applied to the surface of the substrate by the application jet to give the treated fabric. The treatment prepn. is composed of 5-75 wt.% a functional chemical, 0.2-5 wt.% foaming agent and 0-5 wt.% wetting agent. The remainder is water. The process can be used to treat fabrics, non-woven fabrics, paper or wood veneers. It can apply a flame retardant, a waterproof or water resistant cladding, a latex, a fabric softener, a lubricant, a hand builder, a dye or pigment, a lightener or bleach, a bonding agent or a scouring agent. The process is more economical as water extraction and drying are reduced so that less energy is required to finish the treatment process.
