Abstract

The mandrel comprises a tube slightly longer than the required hose which is supported horizontally and rotated while a carriage, for dispensing tape, tracks parallel to the mandrel. The mandrel is turned by positively driven jaws at both ends, the electric drives of the jaws being linked by an 'electric tree' to ensure synchronisation. The mandrel is supported at intervals by pairs of free collars parallel to and below the axis of the mandrel. Esp. for mfr. of hoses >=100m long from strip rubber and/or rubberised fabric, e.g. for making water, petrol or gas distribution hoses with a min. frequency of joints. The torque balance at each end of the mandrel stabilises its alignment to ensure that strips are laid up under highly constant tension and with negligible displacement or distortion.
