Abstract

An apparatus is claimed to drive the needles in a knitter, particularly a flat-bed knitter where the sprung needles are operated by cam discs, with each needle being connected to a drive section, and held in place by a spring which is operated to drive the needle out. Two cam discs, at least, act on opposite sides of the drive cord which are mounted on separate and parallel shafts held to the shafts by carriers which rotate them round the shafts. Control units to act with the keyed carriers on the shafts to give a selective disengagement of the cam discs and to hold them at a given angular orientation. The system provides an individual drive to the needles in a simple and quiet-running mechanism which does not limit the gauge of the machine, and which replaces the pivoted lever drive of conventional knitters.
