Abstract
1443113 Bookbinding; filing papers MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 12 Aug 1974 [13 Aug 1973] 35500/74 Headings B6A and B6E A binder element, e.g. of plastics material, for permanently binding together apertured sheets 21, comprises a first spine 17 having studs 27 provided with ratchet teeth 29, and a second spine 19 having complementary openings each with a wall provided with at least one ratchet tooth 41 thereon extending into the opening and adapted to engage the ratchet teeth of the corresponding stud, a locking block 43 for each opening being adapted to fit into the opening to hold the ratchet teeth of the two spines in engagement. Each locking block is attached adjacent its respective opening by a thin web 45 which may be broken, or may act as a hinge, as the block is forced into the opening. The protruding portions of the studs are cut off. The studs may be of circular, oval or rectangular cross-section. In the latter case, only one face of each stud, except the centre stud (33) is provided with ratchet teeth, Fig. 2 (not shown). The spines have sheet engaging points 49, 51.

Claims (12)
1. A binding element for an apertured nook or the like, comprising a first spine having a plurality of studs extending therefrom, a second mating spine having vails defining openings for receiving said studs, and means for securing the studs in the openings characterized by the feature that said means for securing said studs includes a plurality of ratchet teeth on at least one edge of each of said studs, at least one ratchet tooth projecting inwardly from one vail of eaoh of said openings and adapted to engage the ratchet teeth on a mating one of said studs and members adapted to move into said openings to hold said ratchet teeth of the tvo spines in permanent engagement vith each other.
2. A binding element according to Claim 1 further characterized in that said members consist of a plurality of blocks and said second mating spine includes a plurality of thin webs, eaoh veb holding one of said blocks to said second mating spine at the edge of a different one of said openings.
3. · binding element according to Claim 2 further characterized in that said thin webs are adapted to be fractured to afford movement of eaoh block into the adjacent opening.
4. A binding element according to Claim 2 further characterized in that said thin vebs are flexible and afford rotation of each block into the adjacent opening. 45452/3
5. A binding element according to Claim 2, 3 or 4 further characterized in that eaoh of said blocks is adapted for a frietlonal fit between the vail of the adjacent opening opposite the ratchet tooth and one of said studs received in said opening.
6. · A binding element according to Claim 2 further characterized in that said openings have a size adapted to freely receive said studs; at each opening one of said webs attaches the adjacent block at the edge of the opening opposite the ratchet tooth; and the valla defining each ... opening include a shoulder adjacent said veb and define an undercut adjacent said shoulder adapted to receive a portion of the ruptured web upon movement of said block into the opening to hold a ratchet tooth on one of the studs received in the opening in engagement with the ratchet tooth defining One wall of the opening.
7. A binding element according to Claim 6 further characterized in that each of said blocks is tapered on an edge opposite the web to reduce binding as the block im forced into the opening after insertion therein of one of the studs.

A binding element according to any of Claim 2 through 7 further characterized in that the shape and size of eaoh o said blocks is adapted so that the exposed surface of the block will be flush with the surface of the second spine upon forcing the block into the adjacent opening after insertion therein of one of the studs. 45452/3 t
9. Λ binding element according to any preceding Claim further characterized in that eaid etude have ratchet teeth along essentially their entire length.
10. · A binding element according to any preceding Claim further characterized in that the studs on the irst spine have ratchet teeth facing in one direction on one side of the center line of the spine and have teeth facing in the opposite direction on the other side of said center line.
11. A binding element according to Claim 10 further characterized in that said first spine has an odd number of studs and the center stud has ratchet teeth on opposite sides thereof.
