Claims (13)

WHAT WE CLAIM IS:-
1. A capsule comprising a body having a closed-end v/all and a side wall having a generally cylindrical open-end portion, and a cap having a closed-end wall and a generally cylindrical side wall closely t el escopi cal ly received over the open end of the., body, said body and cap being separable and re-closable after manufacture so as to enable a product to be inserted into said body, the walls of said body and cap being composed of two layers, the materials constituting said layers being soluble at pH ranges which are different but overlapping.
2. Capsule as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the inner of said wo layers comprising the walls of the capsule is soluble in solutions of acidic and basic pH and the outer of said two layers is only soluble at a pH greater than 3.5.
3. Capsule as claimed in Claim 2, wherein said inner layer is of gelatin.
4. Capsule as claimed in Claim 2, wherein said outer layer comprises a film-forming material selected from salol , benzoin, n-butyl stearate, carnuba wax, shellac or mixtures thereof,
5. Capsule as claimed in Claim 2, wherein said outer layer comprises a synthetic film-forming material selected from methacrylic acid polymers, carboxyvinyl polymers, partial esters of maleic anhydr ide /v i ny1 alkyl ether and maleic anliydr i d e /a.lken copolymers, hydroxypropy1 methyl cellulose phthalate, cellulose benzoacetate and cellulose acetate phthalate.
6. Capsule as claimed in Claim 2, wherein said inner layer has a double wal l thickness of 0.10 to 0.20mm and is made of gelatin, and said outer layer has a double wall thickness of fro 0.020 to 0.060mm and is made of a synthetic film-forming material as defi ed in Claim 5. 44109-2 ISRAEL G.1.095
7. Capsule as claimed in claim 6, wherein said film-forming material is cellulose acetate phthalate.
8. A capsule as claimed in any one of claim 2 to 7, containing a medicament and having the junction of the cap and body of said capsule sealed by a circu ferential band which is only soluble at a pH greater than 3.5.
9. Method for manufacturing a capsule as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 7, characterised by the steps of : (i) dipping a capsule body pin and a capsule cap pin into a solution of a first film-forming material to a pre-determined depth; (ii) withdrawing said pins and allowing the adherent layer of said first film-forming material to set; (iii) partially or wholly drying the first adherent layer on said pins; (iv) re-dipping said pins into a solution of a second film-forming material in which said first film-forming material is substantially insoluble, said first and second film-forming materials being soluble at pH ranges which are different but overlapping; (v) withdrawing said pins and allowing the adherent layer of said seconcjl film-forming material to set; (vi ) partially or wholly drying the second adherent layer on said pins; (vii) pulling or stripping the resultant two-layer body and cap shells from their respective pins, said body and cap shells each having a closed-end wall and a generally cylindrical open-end portion; (viii) cutting said body and cap shells to the desired length; and (ix) sliding said cap shell telescopically over the open-end portion of said body shell.
10. Method according to claim 9 for manufacturitig a two-part hard gelatin capsule resistant to dissolution in gastric juices, wherein the first film-forming material is gelatin, and the second film-forming material is resistant to dissolution at pH values less than 3.5 but is soluble at higher pH values. 44109-2
11. Method as claimed in claims 9 or 10, wherein step (iv) is preceded by dipping the pins in a solution of a substance capable of promoting adhesion of the inner and outer layers.
12. Method as claimed in claims 9 or 10, wherein, prior tostep (vii), steps (iv) to (vi) are repeated.
13. Method of manufacturing a capsule according to claim 8 which method comprises separating the body and cap of said capsules, filling said pharmaceutical preparation into said body, refitting said cap to said body and sealing said cap and body together by applying a circumferential band to the external junction thereof, said band being comprised of a material resistant to dissolution at pH values less than 3.5.
