Description
XrldB with tearing lines CEBAL GP. 01 34046 The present invention, ^ie^- e-&¾i*e-i«^fltt--W€>¾?te--©€HHC^re^-KH*t-^y-^e-ee*e--G^^ relates to a novel arrangement of the tearing line in the lids known as "easy opening" lids on preserve cans.
These lids are mainly available in three different forms: two more or less parallel tearing lines which define a peripheral strip which can be torn off; a partial opening extending only over a part of the lid surface; finally, a complete opening of the surface, with a single tearing line along the rim of the lid.
This latter form has a certain number of advantages for cans which contain more or less solid products, but a problem arises as regards the positioning of the gripping member, which is still called a tongue, relatively to the tearing line.
In actual fact, to permit the passage of the serrated rollers of the crimping device which fixes the lid on the can, the foremost portion or "nose" of the tongue has to be located at a certain distance from the rim of the can.
A first solution consists in locating the nose of the tongue slightly se back from the tearing line on the side of the detachable part of the lid. The initiation of the tearing action is caused by a pressure exerted by the nose on the detachable panel, which causes a tearing of the line. The force to be exerted for achieving this object is relatively strong.
By enlarging the non-detachable part of the lid, it is possible to position the nose above the tearin line; the initiation is caused by perforation of the line, and this facilitates the operation. However, particularly in round cans, with the tearing line parallel to the rim of the lid, the part no pulled off interferes with the removal of the contents of the can, and particularly the extraction of pastes or other coherent products.
In addition, the position of the nose above the tearing line is proved to be dangerous during the manipulation, as the slightest direct or indirect pressure exerted on the tongue can cause an accidental rupturing of the line.
This last defect has been corrected by locating the tongue in such a way that its nose extends slightly beyond the tearing line in the direction of the rim of the lid. With this solution, which has yet other advantages, it was however necessary to enlarge to a still greater degree the residual rim of the lid.
In order to overcome this disadvantage and to give the opening in the round lid a maximum area, the present invention proposes an improvement which consists in giving the tearing line the form of a circle which is eccentric in relation to the lid, so that the tearing line becomes almost tangential to the lid rim at the point diametrically opposite the nose of the tongue, the spacing between the said nose and the rim of the lid having to be sufficient to allow the crimping rollers to pass.
The invention is explained by means of the accompanying single drawing, which shows in plan view a round lid according to the invention.
The lid (.1) of a round cover, illustrated in the Figure, has on its circumference a flange (2) which, at the moment of closing, is crimped on to the rim of the can. The geometrical centre (3) of the lid (1) is also that of the flange (2).
A gripping member (4) is fixed on this lid (1), close to the edge (2), by means of an integral rivet (5); it has a pointed end or nose (6), which extends beyond the tearing line (7) and which serves to initiate the rupturing of this line (7) at the moment the can is opened. This line (7) is circular, but the radius of this circle is smaller than the distance from the centre (3) of the lid to the flange (2); the difference between these two radii is r.
The centre of the circular tearing line (7) is displaced towards (8), on a straight line (9-9) which passes through the nose (6) and the lid centre (3), by a distance slightly smaller than r, so that at the point (10) where the tearing line (7) comes closest to the inside edge of the flange, it is almost at a tangent to it without merging with it.
On the diametrically opposite side (11), the distance between the nose (6) and the flange (2) is chosen so that the knurled wheels or rollers of the crimping apparatus are able to pass freely. This result
Claims (1)
1. can be obtained while keeping a tearing line of simple geometrical form, and this also makes easier the manufacture and the care of the tool which serves to make the incision in the lid. Another improvement which arises from the use of the lid according to the invention is observed at the moment when the can is opened. For example, the round cans of small depth frequently contain paste; now the fact that the part of the cover which is not torn off is reduced to a minimum at a certain point permits the consumer to slide a knife between the paste and the wall of the can. As the adhesion between the container and the contents is thus broken over a certain surface, the paste mass can be removed very easily without being held by the residual edge, which only reaches its largest size on the other side of the can. C L A I M An easy and complete opening lid for a round can, characterised in that the tearing line in the form of a circle is eccentric in relation to the lid of the can, so that the said line becomes almost tangential to the rim of the lid at the location diametrically opposite to the nose of the tongue, the spacing between the said nose and the rim of the lid having to be sufficient to allow the crimping knurled rollers to pass. 00ΜΡΛΗΥ JS TITIiED .
