Description
for This invention relates to the centering element bobbins and more particularly to a centering least a portion of which is free of any radial deformation induced in the In spinning for the prior to being wound up onto the is subjected to after all and particularly those of a synthetic will tend to to become the yarns are wound onto the bobbin members with a teneion whioh is dependent on the type of yarn and the cular spinning machine being 3aid winding tension causing a yarn pressure on the On the bobbin there is also exerted by the yarn a pressure which is considerably higher than that caused by winding tension and which is due to yarn particularly where a synthetic yarn is which as above disclosed is a result of the stretching action exerted on the It was found that due to this shrinkage if a synthetic yarn is wound into a bobbin even with negligible winding the tension of the yarn as wound on the bobbin can cause a pressure thereon which might reach as high as 200 such pressure has caused jamming of the bobbin on the bobbin According to the there is provided a centering element for bobbins said element comprising a first portion arranged to be secured to the surface of the axial bore of the and a second portion arranged to abut a said two portions being interconnected by a flexible arm integral with said portions whereby said second portion is to radial deformation of said first In order that the structure and features of the centering element and a bobbin provided with it be more clearly some embodiments thereof will no be illustrated by mere way of example and not of reference being made to the accompanying diagrammatic in 1 is a longitudinal section of a first ment of a bobbin in accordance with the present invention 2 a the lines of Figure 3 is a longitudinal section of a second ment of a is a taken on the line of Figure 5 and 6 are fragmentary longitudinal sections of further embodiments of bobbins showing details of the fixing of the centering 7 is a taken on the line of Figure 11 and 12 are longitudinal sections showing still further embodiments of and 13 and 14 are longitudinal fragmentary sections showing the upper ends of yet further embodiments of Firstly referring to Figures 1 and will be seen that there is shown a bobbin 1 of a cylindrical tubular on which a yarn winding 2 is said bobbin 1 being slipped onto a spindle 3 of a spinning the bottom of spindle 3 there are provided teeth 4 engaging in notches at lower end of the bobbin An annular member 5 projects from the inner wall of the bobbin and a flexible arm axially tending therefrom comprises a tubular wall 6 having at its free a enlargement 7 defining an annular bore in which the upper end of spindle Considering Figure it will be clearly seen that should the wall of the bobbin radially deform during yarn this deformation would cause tion of annular member but would cause deformation of the i enlargement the deformation being absorbed by the flexing of the flexible wall the can always be slipped easily off spindle In Figures 3 and 4 there are shown a longitudinal section and a of a bobbin body comprising a tubular wall 8 of an increasing thickness from the ends to the median zone internally of which longitudinal fins 9 project parallel to the axis of the tubular wall and extend radially from said centering element is with the bobbin and comprises an annular member from which flexible arm the arm being comprised of a tubular wall 11 extending in an axial its upper end 12 being inwardly bent so as to lie against the outer surface of spindle The embodiment shown in Figure 5 is similar to that of Figure except that the centering element is comprised of an annular member 13 having a cylindrical external from which an axial tubular wall 14 extends and has its top end inwardly bent similarly to the disclosure in connection with Figure the centering element of Figure 5 is not inte ral with the bobbin which c m r n x having longitudinal fins and a ring 16 onto which said annular member 13 is forced and securely The centering element shown in Figures 6 and 7 is substantially the same as of Figures 1 and 2 and the bobbin of which it a part from that of Figures 1 and 2 by comprising a wall 17 internally of which fins such as at An annular member 19 also projects from wall 17 and is integral with a wall 20 having at its top an enlargement 21 defining a bore in which said spindle 3 is inserted and The bobbin of Figure 8 includes a wall having a cylindrical external surface internally of which there provided a plurality of fins Adjacent the to end of wall 22 a radial or 24 inwardly projects and from which a tubular 25 extends defining an inner bore in which said spindle 3 is accommodated and holds said causing the latter to Figure 9 shows the longitudinal section for the top end only of a bobbin comprised of a wall 26 having cylindrical external surface internally of a plurality of fins 27 At the to of the bobbin there is mounted a centering element comprising a disc or plate 28 havin cylindrical external surface from which a tubular wall 29 wardly having at its bottom end an in which the top end of spindle 3 and In Figure 10 there is shown a further embodiment a bobbin having a centering element wherein the bobbin comprises two cylindrical coaxial tubular walls and 32 interconnected with each other by a filling material such as foamed plastics The centering element is fast with Figure 1 and comprises an annular member 34 projecting from wall and integral with a tubular the top end of which has an enlargement defining a bore in which said spindle 3 is Figure 11 shows a yarn bobbin comprising a tubular wall 41 having internal and external cylindrical surfaces of a circular From internal surface of wall 41 there projects a centering a first portion 42 of which is secured to wall 41 and a second portion 43 of which abuts Portions 42 and 43 of the centering element are by a continuous flexible arm 45 integral with said portions and suitable to substantially obviate deformation in the portion 43 due to radial deformation of portion A ring 46 is secured at the bottom and internally of said tubular wall said ring 46 having notches in which the teeth 4 at the base of spindle 3 are It is advantageous for the bobbin and centering elements to be made from a suitable material so as to enable said wall 41 to deform by decreasing its diameter under the pressure being exerted thereon by yarn Deformation of wall 41 will not cause jamming of the centering element on spindle 3 since portion 43 the centering element will not be radially deformed owing to deflection arm The bobbin of Figure 12 comprises a tubular wall a composite structure as being formed of two superimposed separate tubular wall designated by reference numerals 49 and Adjacent the bottom end of wall member 50 notches are provided for accommodating teeth 4 of spindle whereas adjacent the top end of said wall member 50 the centering and is connected through a continuous arm 52 to wall member 50 forming that portion of the centering element which is secured to the tubular wall of the Similarly to the disclosure in connection with Figure the nature of the plastics material being utilized for the bobbin and thickness of wall members 49 and 50 are such as to enable said wall members to contract under the pressure being exerted theron by the wound up and the centering element is such that its portion 51 will not be radially deformed by deformation in wall 49 and By practical teats it was found that a bobbin having a tubular wall of a composite structure as that shown in Figure 13 exhibits a higher resistance to deformation than that of a bobbin having homogenous tubular the material and wall thickness being the The bobbin shown in longitudinal sectional view in Figure is substantially similar to that of Figure 12 and also comprises a composite tubular wall formed of a tubular wall member 44 and a tubular member 53 internal the centering element being fast The bobbin of Figure 13 differs from that of Figure 12 only in that the tubular wall member extends above the centering In Figure 14 a longitudinal sectional view is shown of a portion of a bobbin substantially similar to that of Figure 11 and comprising a tubular wall the latter being fast with a centering a portion 55 of which abuts spindle 3 and is connected through a flexible arm 56 to a portion 57 of said centering said portion 57 bein secured to the internal surface of tubular wall seen from the foregoing the centering element can be made integral with the or can be independently of the bobbin on which it can be mounted after said bobbin is The bobbin can be of any shape in the ar and can be made of different materials already utilized in the such as plastics cardboard or the it should be appreciated that the use of the centering elements as described enables the manufacture of a bobbin with a tially lower amount of material than thus obtaining a bobbin of a somewhat reduced weight and of a lower cost over that of equivalent the lower weight also allowing the bobbin to be rotated on the spindle at a substantially higher speed than The portion of the centering element contacting or intended to contact the as already rather than being made as a continuous annular can be comprised of a plurality of segments or fingers from the annular member secured to the inner wall of the The as shown in the are arranged for deformation as to take the considerable pressure being exerted thereon by the In order to practically 3how the efficiency of a bobbin as Kg of multifilament nylon yarn count was wound onto a polystyrene the wall thickness of which being only and weighing 110 and it was found that said bobbin completely satisfactorily accomplishes all the functions being required therefrom and affords even winding up of the yarn and a ready slipping off of the bobbin it was required for such a yarn as that above mentioned to employ a steel bobbin of Kg weight cannot be reduced as the bobbin has to withstand a pressure of about 200 atmospheres exerted thereon by the yarn as due to the shrinkage or contraction of said As a proof of the exactness of the above the walls of the steel bobbin were thinned and the weight thereof reduced to 350 and it found that upon winding the said bobbin yielded and was rendered uselees by deformation at about one half of the amount and count formerly Another test was carried out by winding up Kg of yarn count on an ordinary tubular bobbin of layer wound paper treated with trade and weighing 350 in accordance with conventional It was found that a bobbin of a shape as any of those shown in the figures of the accompanying made of polystyrene and of a weight less than 200 grams is quite efficient to effectively support the above As it can be seen from the two above disclosed numerical the preferably of plastics as described have a substantially lower weight and cost less than conventional Inte this enables substantial savings in transportation to achieved and avoids the need of resorting to the expensive process of recovering the insufficientOCRQuality
