Abstract

A protective housing is provided for a cash register or the like, the housing comprising a side wall having an opening therein; and a substantially transparent portion including a pocket for containing a readily replaceable display sheet.

Description

This invention relates to a particular, it relates to a cash register or the like. protective device. In protective housing for a According to the present invention there is provided a protective housing for a cash register or the like, the housing comprising a side wall having an opening therein; and a substantially transparent portion including a pocket for containing a readily replaceable display sheet.
The housing preferably has a generally rectangular external configuration, comprising two opposing spaced apart substantially vertical side walls and a substantially transparent front wall extending therebetween and connected thereto.
The pocket for the display sheet is preferably disposed in the lower part of the transparent front wall. The pocket has an opening through which the display sheet is inserted, the opening being disposed on the external side of the front wall.
The housing preferably further comprises a cover member having substantially the same width as the front wall and extending upwardly and rearwardly therefrom to approximately the mid-point of each side wall. The cover member is preferably substantially rectangular $940237 - 2 and transparent and has a pocket for containing a further display sheet.
The housing preferably comprises a substantially flat base wall on which the cash register or the like is placed.
The invention will now be further described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one preferred embodiment of a protective housing according to the invention, and in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view from the front of the protective housing; and Figure 2 is a perspective view from the rear of the protective housing.
The protective housing shown in Figures 1 and 2 comprises two opposing spaced apart substantially vertical side walls 1 and 2; a substantially transparent front wall 3 extending therebetween and connected by conventional means thereto; and a substantially flat, generally rectangular base 4. Longitudinal edges 5 and 6 of respective side walls 1 and 2 are preferably slightly tapered inwardly and upwardly from the base 4 throughout their length.
Upper edges 7 and 8 of the side walls 1 and 2, respectively, preferably have an inverted substantially V-shaped profile. $940237 - 3 The front wall 3 may, if desired, be positioned at an angle relative to the base 4 so that it is inclined in an inward direction. The front wall 3 has a pocket 9, preferably in the lower part thereof, for containing a display panel 10. The panel 10 comprises a sleeve having a flange and containing a display sheet, which is preferably an advertisement for a newspaper. The sleeve is formed from a plastics material, clear polyvinylchloride being particularly preferred. The pocket 7 extends between the side walls 1 and 2 and has an opening 11 in the form of a transverse slot which has the same width as the pocket 9. The slot 11 is disposed on the exterior side of the front wall 3 so that the display panel 10 may be readily inserted and removed.
The housing shown in Figures 1 and 2 has a substantially transparent cover member 20 having substantially the same width as the front wall 3 and extending upwardly and rearwardly from the top end thereof to approximately the mid-point of the side walls 1 and 2 and along the front leg of the inverted V of the upper edges 7 and 8. The cover member 20 comprises a pocket which is coextensive therewith for containing a display panel 21 which is essentially the same as the display panel 10. The display panel 21 preferably contains an advertisement for cigarettes.
The display panel 21 is inserted into the pocket 20 through a transverse slot 22 which is located along the uppermost (inner) edge of the pocket 20. - 4 A conventional light source (not shown) is arranged behind each of the display panels 10 and 21 so as to highlight the advertisements contained therein.
The housing according to the invention advantageously comprises a shelf 30 disposed at the rear side thereof, above the cash register or the like. The shelf 30 extends between the side walls 1 and 2 and is supported by conventional means. The shelf 30 has an axially extending recess which is substantially coextensive with the shelf. The recess can be used for storing display panels which are not in use. The shelf 30 conveniently has a document clip 31 on the upper surface thereof. User instructions, e.g., for the cash register, can be screen-printed along an edge of the shelf 30. A panel 40 may be fixed to each side wall 1, 2 in order to hide the connections, such as countersunk screws.
The side walls 1 and 2, the base 4 and the shelf 30 may be formed from any suitable material, timber melamine being particularly preferred. The front wall 3 and the cover member 20 may be formed from any suitable transparent material, preferably a plastics material, such as clear acrylic or clear polyvinylchloride.
The invention thus provides a protective device for a cash register or the like which provides not only protection, but also advertising facilities of an interchangeable nature. In use, a display panel 10 containing an advertisement, e.g. for a morning or S 94 0 23 7 evening newspaper, is inserted into the lower front pocket 9. This display panel may then be removed readily at the appropriate time and another display panel inserted. The display panel 21 in the cover member 20 may also be replaced in a similar manner.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment described herein which may be modified or varied without departing from the scope of the invention.
