IE 90538 CS293 This invention relates to a weather excluder of the kind comprising an elongate channel member for locating on a threshold below the lower edge of a door or window.
A known weather excluder of this kind is shown in Figure 1, and comprises an elongate channel member 10 of substantially constant cross-section which is, for example, extruded from a lightweight metal such as aluminium.
The channel member 10 has front and rear pairs of legs 11, 12 and 13, 14 respectively on its underside by which the member is stood on a door or window sill or threshold 15. In Figure 1 the excluder is shown located beneath the lower edge of a door 16 which opens inwardly as shown by the arrow 17, the building exterior being to the left of the door (as seen in Figure 1) and the building interior being to the right of the door.
An upwardly extending resilient seal 18 carried by the member 10 towards the rear thereof seals against the underside of the door 16 when the latter is closed to prevent wind and rain from entering the interior of the building.
IE 90538 Finally, drainage holes 19 are provided at the front of the channel member 10 to permit any rainwater which may enter the channel to drain away to the outside.
Weather excluders of the above kind are fitted by screwing to the door or window threshold 15. For this purpose the channel member 10 has a series of holes (not shown) along its length for accommodating screws 20.
In order to prevent draughts and water being driven from the exterior to the interior of the building underneath the excluder, the spaces 21, 22 between the front and rear pairs of legs of the channel member 10 are filled with a silicone or mastic sealant.
However, if the channel member 10 is installed onto a wet surface the silicone or mastic does not adhere properly thus allowing moisture to penetrate later. Also, if the person fitting the excluder runs out of mastic, or forgets to bring some with him, it is often fitted without mastic resulting in severe moisture penetration. On the other hand, a too liberal use of mastic can block the drainage holes 19.
According to the present invention there is provided a weather excluder comprising an elongate channel member for locating on a door or window threshold, and a resilient seal carried on the underside of the member for sealing between the underside of the member and the threshold.
Preferably, the channel member has at least one pair of legs on its underside by which the member is stood on the threshold, and the seal comprises a main IE 90538 body portion retained snugly between the pair of legs and an integral sealing portion projecting downwardly beyond the free ends of the legs.
In one embodiment of the invention the main body portion of the seal is hollow, and the sealing portion is a blade projecting beyond the free ends of the legs.
Alternatively, in another embodiment, the main body portion of the seal comprises a cellular rubber body and the sealing portion is an integral blunt protuberance also of cellular rubber projecting downwardly beyond the free ends of the legs, the main body portion having a layer of non-cellular rubber integral with the surface of the cellular rubber inside the pair of legs.
The advantage of the invention is that the underside of the channel member is automatically sealed against the door or window threshold as the channel member is fitted, obviating the need for mastic. Nevertheless, if desired mastic may be used as well as the resilient seal, and where the channel member has two pairs of legs this may be placed between the front or rear pair of legs, i.e. that pair which does not accommodate the seal, or if it is desired to use the channel member without the seal, between both pairs of legs.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1, previously described, is a cross-section through a known type of weather excluder; IE 90538 Figure 2 shows how the weather excluder of Figure 1 may be modified to provide an embodiment of the invention, and Figure 3 shows an alternative embodiment of the 5 invention.
Referring now to Figure 2, the excluder of Figure 1 is modified by providing a resilient seal 30 on the underside of the channel member 10 and extending along the length thereof for sealing between the underside of the channel member and the threshold 15.
In particular, in the embodiment shown, the seal 30 comprises a main body portion 31 which is hollow and which is retained snugly in the space 21 between the front pair of legs 11, 12, and an integral sealing portion in the form of a blade 32 which projects (when the excluder is not fitted to a threshold 15) downwardly beyond the free ends of the legs 11 and 12. It will be understood that Figure 2 only shows the front pair of legs 11, 12 of the excluder, since otherwise the embodiment of the excluder according to the invention may be the same as described in Figure 1.
Clearly, when the excluder is fitted to a threshold, whose level is indicated in Figure 2 by the dashed lines 15', the blade 32 will be deflected sideways and the hollow body portion 31 compressed until the entire seal 30 is accommodated up in the space 21. In this position the blade 32 seals against the threshold so eliminating the need for mastic or like sealant or at least reducing the adverse effects resulting from its omission.
IE 90538 The seal 30 is retained in the space 21 between the legs 11 and 12 by a hook-like formation 33 which engages behind a ledge 34 which projects from the inside surface of the leg 12 partially towards the other leg 11.
Referring now to Figure 3, in which like components have been given the same of similar reference numerals as Figures 1 and 2, the main body portion of the seal 40 comprises a cellular rubber body 31' and the sealing portion is an integral blunt protuberance 32' also of cellular rubber projecting downwardly beyond the free ends of the legs 11 and 12.
Further, the main body portion has a supporting and strengthening layer 31, in this case of non-cellular rubber, constituting an inverted trough integral with the surface of the cellular rubber body 31' inside the pair of legs .
As before, the seal is retained in the space 21 between the legs 11 and 12 by a hook-like formation 33' formed on the layer 31 which engages behind the ledge 34.
Although shown between the front pair of legs, it is to be understood that the seal of either embodiment could be fitted between the rear pair of legs.
