Description

The invention relates to flexible strip fasteners of the sliderless variety for closing plastics material pouches. Such a fastener may, among other things, serve to provide a closure for the mouth of a plastics bag for holding articles of merchandise at point-of-sale display.
Such fasteners are known, for example from British Patent Specifications 752,348, 800,169, 841,142 and 957,825. In all these cases, the fastener strips are provided with integral, laterally-projecting flanges for connection to the pouch to be closed. This connection is indeed a problem in the art, causing difficulties of alignment in manufacture, and unpleasant bulges or thickenings and thus waste of material. In British Patent Specification 1,150,632, the problem is solved by extruding the strips in one piece with the pouch material, but this has proved difficult to work in practice, and is expensive to operate.
A fastener according to the invention comprises two strips of flexible material provided with releasably interlockable longitudinal rib and groove elements, the fastener being generally of rectangular or square cross-section and not provided with any projecting flange by which '’'-'’’-the·· fastener„may be secured to an article. Having no flange, such a fastener is generally smaller than those known in the art, and can be introduced at any part of a bag or pouch, not only at the mouth. A lip may thus be left outside the closure, and cut to provide a handle or decorated for display purposes. The lip can be used in opening or closing the bag.
The fastener being generally of rectangular or square crosssection makes it readily aligned for installation in bag making machinery, -248234 and insertable precisely where desired in a bag. The fastener may be secured in position by means of an adhesive or by welding. Thus the fastener is preferably of the same material as the bag to which it is to be applied, for example polyethylene, polypropylene or polyvinyl chloride. At least one of the strips may be coloured by means of a dye or pigment incorporated in the plastics material of which it is made. This can render the fastener distinctive as part of the overall design of a bag, or useful for colour-coding of the finished bag as to its contents or for any other purpose.
A fastener according to the invention can be inexpensively manufactured by extruding from dies one above another or side by side, and pressing the resulting two strips together as soon as they have cooled. A rib on one strip lockable in a single groove on another is all that is necessary, but more than one of each may be provided for increased closure strength. A rib may of course also function as a side wall of a groove.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the drawing which is a section or end view of a fastener. In the drawing, two identical strips 2 of flexible plastics material are each provided with releasably interlockable longitudinal ribs 4, 5, 6, between adjacent pairs of'which are corresponding grooves 8, 9. The fastener is generally of rectangular cross-section when closed, although particularly in the open position shown the sides are inclined inwards. The outer ends of the ribs 5, 6 are provided with lugs 5a, 5a respectively. On closing the fastener, the lugs 5a and 6a engage, and the pressure applied bends the ribs 5, 6 laterally until the lugs 5a, 6a pass and interlock in the grooves 8, 9.
On opening the reverse happens.
