1536757 Glass jars FERRERO GmbH 28 June 1976 [3 July 1975] 26865/76 Heading B8D The longer opposed side walls 10 and 11 of an elliptical or rectangular cross-sectionally-shaped glass jar having an externally-threaded cylindrical neck (2), Fig. 1 (not shown), which walls are less widely-spaced than the external diameter of the neck threads, are each provided with a bulge 12 extending outwardly to or beyond the radial extent of the threads to protect the latter in the event of two such jars bumping together.

Description

This invention relates to a glass jar, especially for ood, with a neck section provided with a thread ridge or idges fitting into a screw cap, and such thread ridge or idges protruding radially beyond at least a portion of the alls of the glass jar.
Various glass jars containing either or other bread preads or pickles or other vegetables, some of them rovided with screw plugs or screw caps, are already known.
When the neck section is provided with thread ridges rotruding radially beyond at least a portion of the wall f the glass jar, difficulties in packaging arise from the ecurrent fact that the thread ridges bump into each other hile the glass jars are being transported on a conveyor elt, for instance leading to a filling machine, so that lass splinters may come off, part of whioh may get into he jars and it might not be possible to remove them before illing, thus causing waste.
The invention has an object to reduce the susceptibility f glass jars to splinter.
Accordingly the present invention provides a glass jar omprising a body and a cylindrical neck formed with atl enter- 3 42888 nal screw thread ridge for receipt of a screw cap, wherein the body has a first pair of opposed wall portions which are spaced between their respective external surfaces by a distance less than the external diameter of said screw thread ridge, a projection on each of said opposed wall portions extending outwardly by an amount equal to or greater than the radial extent of the screw thread ridge and a second pair of opposed wall portions being spaced between their external surfaces a greater distance than said diameter of said screw thread ridge.
Thus, as the parts of the thread on the glass jars shaped according to the invention do not protrude” beyond the projection or bulge of the jar, the respective glass jars are protected against splintering to a higher degree IS than hitherto known.
Additionally, there is the advantage that the particular shape of such glass jars facilitates their packaging, e.g. in cardboard boxes, for it is no longer necessary to package these glass jars individually, what is more, they may be dispatched lying side by side. Thus, the new glass jar also guarantees an essential saving of packing material.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention the projection or bulge is of the same diameter as the tips of the threads.
The invention may be used for all types of glass jars provided with an at least partly protruding thread ridge(s). Consequently, the invention may be applied in the case of elliptical glass jars as well as in the case of generally rectangular jars where segments of the thread ridge(s) protrude. © - 4 An embodiment of the invention will now be described ay way of example with reference to the accompanying irawings in which: Fig. 1 shows a schematic view of the long side of an exemplary embodiment according to the invention and Fig. 2 shows a schematic view of the narrow side af the same embodiment.
The shape of a glass jarss (l) cross-section, as nay be used for jam or a nut-containing bread spread, for instance, is generally elliptical.
As may be seen from Fig. 1, the diameter of the glass jar over its long sides is larger than the diameter of its leek section (2) which is provided with a thread ridge (3).
A screw cap (4) made of plastics material for instance, can be screwed on to the neck section (2) or die thread ridge (3) respectively. The external surface (5) of this screw cap is knurled as may be seen in Fig. 2. i/hile no splinters can come off the thread ridge (3) of the leek section (2), if the glass jars bump into each other snd to end (6 or 7 resp.) the aforementioned damages would iccur, if the respective long sides (10 and 11) of the ;lass jars were to bump into each other.
Consequently, as may be seen from Fig. 2, the glass iar»s (1) long sides are each provided with a projection ir bulge (12). These bulges have been made to project ’urther than the thread ridges in the radial direction thereof and it is possible to make them extend radially ;o the same extent as the thread ridges, it is preferred .o place the bulges immediately under the neck section; lowever, they may also be situated on a lower section of .he glass jar.
In the illustrated embodiment the distance between the external surfaces of the two longer walls of the glass jar is somewhat less than the external diameter of the cap (5), even if the bulges are taken into account, as may be seen from Fig. 2; but it is equally possible to provide the bulges in a way to make them flush with the external surface of the cap.
It will be appreciated that the jar may be elliptical or rectangular in cross-section.

Claims (5)

1. A glass jar comprising a body and a cylindrical neck formad uith an exteroaj screw thread ridge for receipt of a screw cap, wherein the body has a first pair of opposed wall portions which are spaced between their respective external surfaces by a distance less than the external diameter of said screw thread ridge, a projection on each of said opposed wall portions extending outwardly by an amount equal to or greater than the radial extent of the screw thread ridge and a second pair of opposed wall portions being spaced between their external surfaces a greater distance than said diameter of said screw thread ridge.
2. A glass jar as claimed in Claim 1, wherein each said projection is disposed immediately below said neck.
3. A glass jar as claimed in Claim 1 or 2, wherein each projection is rounded off in the same manner as the screwthread ridge.
4. A glass jar as claimed in Claim 1, wherein said body is of generally rectangular or elliptical cross-section and each said projection is disposed on a respective one of the longer wall portions thereof, which longer wall portions are greater in length than the external diameter of said screw-thread ridge.
5. A glass jar substantially as herein described with reference to, and as illustrated in, the accompanying drawings.
