Abstract

1456354 Carnitine hydrochloride LONZA Ltd 9 Sept 1975 [25 Sept 1974 (2)] 37042/75 Heading C2 Carnitine hydrochloride is made by (a) reacting an enolized gamma-haloacetic acid alkyl ester with trimethylamine to give a (3-carboalkoxy - 2 - oxopropyl) trimethyl ammonium halide, (b) hydrogenating the latter to a carnitine alkyl ester and (c) hydrolysing the ester with aqueous hydrochloric acid to give carnitine hydrochloride. In a modification the product of step (a) is obtained by reacting the gammahaloacetic acid alkyl ester with an alcoholate and then reacting the product with trimethylamine. [GB1456354A]
