Abstract

1473835 Crimped polyolefin filaments JAMES MACKIE & SONS Ltd 7 Aug 1974 [17 Aug 1973] 39022/73 Heading B5B Filaments of semi-crystalline polyolefins, e.g. pigmented polypropylene, are melt spun, rapidly and asymmetrically cooled, e.g. by an air current, formed into a tow or tows, heat treated at at least 100‹ C. so that a latent crimp of at least 2 crimps per cm. is produced, and subjected to two or more stages of drawing, the last stage being at at least 70‹ C. The heat treatment and first drawing stage may be carried out in a hot air or radiant oven, or by means of heated rollers or other surfaces, and the last drawing stage may be carried out in a water bath. The filaments may be formed into staple and spun into yarn, and used for making carpets. A further stage of heat treatment causes the latent crimp in the filaments to appear, and this treatment may be performed after formation of yarn or during the manufacture of the finished product, e.g. carpet, for instance when the backing is applied. A mechanical crimp may be applied to the filaments before the final heat treatment. [GB1473835A]
