Abstract
1397089 4-Chloro-2-oxobenzothiazoline preparation BOOTS CO Ltd 28 Nov 1973 [1 Dec 1972] 55684/72 Heading C2C 4-Chloro-2-oxobenzo-[1,3]-thiazoline (or 4- chloro-2-hydroxybenz-[1,3]-thiazole) is prepared by diazotizing 2-amino-4-chlorobenzothiazole hydrohalide in the presence of a halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent in which the major products of the diazotization are soluble to the extent of at least 10% w/v at 20‹ C, and hydrolysing the product. The solvent is preferably a chlorinated hyrocarbon such as ethylene dichloride, methylene chloride, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, tetrachloroethane, triohloroethylene, perchloroethylene, 1,1,1-trichloroethane or ethylene dibromide. The diazotization is preferably conducted in HCl and/or CH 3 COOH and hydrolysis with a mineral acid, e.g. HCl. The starting material is preferably obtained by cyclizing N-2-chlorophenylthiourea in the same solvent as used for the diazotization and subjecting the product, without isolation, to diazotization. Compounds of the general formula where B is a carboxyl group or the salt, ester, amide or nitrile thereof, are obtained by reacting 4 - chloro - 2 - oxobenzo - [1,3] - thiazoline with ACH 2 B or R 1 OCH 2 CN where A is a halogen atom and R 1 is alkanesulphonyl or arenesulphonyl.
