Abstract

Cigarette filter contains an extruder element of foamed open celled resin (thermoplastic HD polyethylene or polypropylene) having the same section as the cigarette and a microstructure giving the filter a hardness coefficient >50% pressure loss 15g/cm2 and tar filtration yield >20%. Foam density is 0.015-0.1 g/cm3 and specific area is 10-80 m2/g. The microstructure contains gaps bridged by strands (0.1-2 microns) of fibre (about 100 per gap) forming a network. The resin is softened at 130-150 degrees C and expanded with 0.2 mole of foaming agent (lower hydrocarbon) per 100g product. [FR2114696A5]
