Abstract

1340901 Pictures HALLMARK CARDS Inc 19 April 1971 [31 March 1970] 24616/71 Heading B6K [Also in Division B5] A method of producing an article with a threedimensional coloured design on one face, e.g. a picture, comprises the steps of printing an image 12 on a formable sheet 14 of, e.g. cellulose acetate using a fast drying ink applied by offset lithography, vacuum forming the sheet 14 on a mould 22 made from phenolic resin, metal, wood or a ceramic material, the sheet being formed so that the image 12 is on it underface, stripping the sheet 14 from the mould 22, and placing it inverted in a mould support 30 to form a cavity into which a solidifiable composition, e.g. polyester resin containing titanium dioxide, is poured, so that during setting the colour design is transferred from the sheet 14 on to the solidified composition, the sheet being subsequently peeled away and discarded. The sheet 14 is placed in a heater 18 until it begins to sag, and the heater is then lowered to the vacuum mould 22. The sheet 14 can be of paper material, and it can be formed between male and female dies. The mould 22 can be formed from an engraved plate, e.g. of zinc or aluminium. A decorative layer of gold or silver foil may be applied to the border of the article by stamping. A coloured background can be applied over the image 12 imprinted on the sheet 14. [GB1340901A]
