Abstract

1,210,254. Catamenial tampon. SPONCEL Ltd. 17 July, 1968 [19 July, 1967], No. 33094/ 67. Heading A5R. Tampons. A catamenial tampon for absorbing moisture from wounds or incisions comprises an absorbent elongated cylindrical body 1 of regenerated cellulose material at least partly covered by a permeable outer covering 2 bonded to the surface of the sponge material, the latter being compressed and dried so that the body is reduced in size compared to its moist relaxed state shown and the covering 2, of knitted or woven fabric being capable of permitting expansion of the body in use. The body comprises a fine pore sponge containing reinforcing fibres, and a withdrawal cord 3 is threaded through a hole 4 pierced in the core and covering, the covering serving to distribute tension from the withdrawal cord over the sponge material to prevent it breaking up. The sponge body is compressed during manufacture, transversely from a cylindrical rectangular or ellipsoidal relaxed shape to a dry compressed shape in which the major transverse direction when dry is at right angles to that when wet. A lubricant may be provided to facilitate insertion of the tampon, one end of which may be curved or of trapezium shaped profile. The tampon may also be impregnated with preservatives for reducing attack by bacteria or fungi, and also with medicaments, humidifying agents, deodorants, odour producing substances or substances for increasing its hydrophilic properties. Tampon-introducers. A disposable applicator, Fig. 3 (not shown) may be provided comprising two cylindrical tubes (9), (10) arranged to slide within one another. The tampon is placed into the larger tube (9), and tube (10) pushed into tube (9), so that the tampon is ejected. The leading edge of the tube (10) is curved, (10a) so that effective pressure may be placed on the tampon. [GB1210254A]
