Abstract

1,230,982. Polyester filaments. DUNLOP CO. Ltd. 8 May, 1968 [11 May, 1967], No. 21912/67. Heading B5B. [Also in Divisions D1 and H1] A polyester reinforcing textile, e.g. a tyre cord, is exposed to a plasma, which is a region in a gas discharge which contains charged ions, and the treated cord may then be incorporated in a vulcanizable natural or synthetic rubber composition containing an aromatic polyhydroxy compound and a compound containing methylene groups reactable with the polyhydroxy compound to form a condensation resin and vulcanizing the composition at a temperature at which the compound containing methylene groups is unstable to form the condensation resin, so as to produce a reinforced rubber article. The textile may be treated with an adhesion aid, e.g. a nylon type or viscoserayon type dip, after exposure to the plasma and prior to incorporation into the rubber. The textile may be made from polyethylene terephthalate or poly-(1,4-cyclohexylene dimethylene terephthalate). The plasma may comprise argon, helium, nitrogen, air, ammonia, carbondioxide, water vapour or mixtures thereof and the treatment chamber may contain parallel plate electrodes and the discharge maintained by an A.C. or D.C. potential or the discharge may be maintained without electrodes by a radio frequency source external to the vacuum system, the radio frequency field being applied by external coils. For details of the apparatus used, see Division H1. [GB1230982A]
