Abstract

The object of the present invention is to produce synthetic lightweight aggregates comprising sewage sludge from wastewater treatment plants and optionally one or more additives comprising natural or non-coal ash solid waste materials. The group of natural materials comprises clay, shale or slate, limestone, dolomite, and the group of waste materials comprises residues from the mining or mineral processing industries, waste glass, gasification residues, municipal solid waste incineration residues, slag from steel and iron blast furnaces, harbor dredging, kiln dusts, filter dusts and a range of natural materials and industrial waste. Sewage sludge is digested, dewatered, dried or incinerated. The method of producing synthetic lightweight aggregates comprises mixing sewage sludge with one or more natural or waste materials, agglomerating the mixture and heat processing at temperatures between 800 and 1300 βαθμοί Κελσίου in a furnace or a rotary kiln. Alternatively sewage sludge can be processed alone, agglomerated and heat processed. Processing sewage sludge with other solid wastes for the production of synthetic lightweight aggregates for use in concrete and other commercial applications, is one of the most attractive applications, because it significantly contributes towards solving the problems associated with the disposal of these wastes, while reducing the dependence on natural non -renewable resources.
