Abstract

The invention refers to a portable mobile telephony device via which is performed the reception and processing of elements (covered distance and elapsed time) of a hired route by a taxi, so that, after the execution of suitable calculations (that are realized by the electronic circuit of the portable device) and the display of corresponding results, it gives to its operator the ability to verify, approximately, the validity of the display of the taximeter of the hired vehicle. This portable mobile telephone device incorporates a position tracking unit the operation of which depends on either a satellite position tracking system (GPS) or the instant position of the device according to transmitters of cellular telephone signal or a combination of the aforementioned two methods. The operation of said portable device consists of the counting of the covered distance of the hired route (according to position tracking signals) and, after executing a suitable algorithm (which algorithm is incorporated into the operating program of the device and said algorithm simulates the operation of the taximeter of the hired vehicle), the portable device calculates the payable fare according, also, to signals from its incorporated clock. In a more complicated embodiment of the present invention, the portable telephone device performs the updating of the data which are stored in its electronic memory -concerning legislation changes in the charging parameters of hired routes, for various different locations- and this updating is being performed via a signal which is transmitted by a remote data bank and said signal is received by the mobile telephone device wherein the said arrangement (for the verification of indications of the taximeter) is incorporated.
