Abstract

The invention refers to a novel method for the operation of an internal combustion engine (1), which is supplied, in part, with Produced Fuel derived from the thermal trearment of a carbonaceous material (10) with hot combustion gases which contain oxygen. The production rate of this fuel and the feeding rate thereof to the engine is controlled only approximately while, on the contrary, the supply of a Conventional Fuel (e.g. hydrocarbons stored in the tank 14) is precisely controlled by a digital controlled unit (5), so that the oxygen content in the exiting combustion gases, as estblished by a sensor (8), is between two predefined limits. The combustion gases of the engine are split into Exhaust Combustion Gases, which escape in the atmosphere, and Recyclable Combustion Gases which are directed into a reactor (9) where these affect the carbonaceous material (10), and then, enriched with fuel, enter the engine. The quanitative partition of the combustion gases in Exhaust and Recyclable Combustion Gases is controlled, depending on the instant needs of the engine. The invention comprises various configurations of the reactor, according to which the Recyclable Combustion Gases donot pass through the mass of the Carbonaceous Material but, on the contrary, these move tangentially to its exposed surface so that these retain their kinetic and thermal oneRCGy. Finally, novel devices for the purification and upgrading of the components of the Produced Fuel as well as novel ways for exploiting some of these components are provided.
