Abstract

999,667. Rotary piston engines. I. LAING. Jan. 15, 1962 [Jan. 13, 1961; Jan. 19, 1961], No. 1486/62. Heading F1F. [Also in Division F4] Cooling fluid circulated through passages 11, 12, in the housing 2 and/or piston 1 of a rotary piston machine is cooled in a heat exchanger rigidly connected to a rotating part of the machine, the heat exchanger comprising hollow fan blades 22 which communicate with said passages and which on rotation of the heat exchanger induce a flow of air thereover. As shown, an I.C. engine of epitrochoidal type has a three-sided piston which rotates about an eccentric portion 4 of a fixed shaft 5 and in operation the housing and piston rotate at different speeds, drive being taken from a shaft 20 which is fixed to the housing and rotates on the fixed shaft 5. The heat exchanger is mounted on the housings and cooling fluid from the interior of the latter passes through apertures 30 into a space 28 containing impeller blades 28 which force the fluid upwardly through some of the fan blades. The fluid returns through the remaining blades to a space 26 whence it passes through the housing around a partition 35 and through apertures 16, 18 into the interior of the piston which it leaves through apertures 13, 14. In the embodiment of Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) the housing is fixed and the piston shaft is driven, the heat exchanger being secured to this shaft. The impeller 28 may be replaced by a positive displacement gear wheel pump in the interior of the piston (Figs. 8 and 9, not shown). Specifications 999,666; 999,668 and 999,669 are referred to.
