Abstract

A "carbon paper" sheet releases oil or wax or both from a porous, spongy synthetic resin layer (see Division D2) In the examples this layer is formed by coating sheets with a solution of the synthetic resin and oil or wax in a mixture of toluol and ethyl acetate The solutes are: (Example 1) a soft copolymer of vinyl chloride and acetate, mineral oil and microcrystalline wax; (Example II) polyvinyl butyral, mineral oil and polyethylene glycol wax; and (Example III) a soft copolymer of vinyl chloride and acetate and lanolin.ALSO:An assembly of sheets comprises a donor sheet which releases oil or wax or both under the effect of heat or imaging pressure and a copy sheet with a coloured foundation and a coating thereon that is opaque but becomes transparent when impregnated with the wax or oil so that the coloured foundation shows through. The oil or wax or both is released from a porous, spongy, synthetic resin layer, carried by the donor sheet. The opaque coating comprises calcium corbonate. The donor sheet may comprise a foundation sheet of paper, cellulose acetate or polyvinyl chloride. The synthetic resin of the donor layer may be polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl fluoride, polyvinyl acetate, a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, polyvinyl butyral, polyacrylic acid, polystyrene, polyvinylidene chloride, polyethylene, polypropylene, a polyurethane or a polyamide. The wax or oil is a non-solvent for the synthetic resin; examples are polyglycols, cetyl alcohol, microcrystalline wax, ouricoury wax, beeswax, montan wax, carnauba wax, lanolin, tallow, petrolatum, hydrogenated cottonseed oil, naphthenic mineral oil, neatsfoot oil, refined rapeseed oil, cottonseed oil, peanut oil, castor oil, olive oil and sperm oil, or mixtures of waxes and oils. The synthetic resin and wax or oil may be applied as a solution in a common solvent, or as an organosol or plastisol. The copy sheet may be of paper or synthetic film and coating of calcium carbonate may be bound by sodium aliginate, carboxymethylcellulose, gelatin or gum arabic. In a modification a number of sheets with a donor layer on one side and a copy layer on the other may be sandwiched between the donor and copy sheets, each of the donor layers in the assembly being next to the copy layer of the next sheet.
