Abstract

A monohydroxydiether of a trihydric alcohol is prepared by heating an alcohol of the formula <FORM:0998553/C2/1> in which R is an alkyl, aryl, or aralkyl group with at least three moles of a b ,g -ethylenically unsaturated alcohol per mole of trihydric alcohol, in the presence of an oxide or salt of bivalent mercury and a complex boron tri-fluoride compound. In a modification, some or all of the alcohol may be used as a monoether with the unsaturated alcohol and wherein at least one mole of free unsaturated alcohol is used per mole of monoether together with at least three moles per mole of any trihydric alcohol present. The reaction may be carried out in an inert solvent and the water formed in the reaction is continuously removed as it is formed.
