Abstract
Carbon dioxide is generated by the action of acetic acid or sodium bicarbonate in order to inflate a lifesaving apparatus. The acid is contained within a first closed container within a second container containing the sodium bicarbonate which is placed within an inflatable part of the apparatus and both containers are of a synthetic plastic material. The first container is broken by external pressure means so as to generate sufficient carbon dioxide to break the second container at a weakened point and inflate the apparatus.ALSO:A gas generating means positioned within an inflatable lifesaving appliance comprises a first closed container disposed within a second closed container which is placed within an inflatable part of the appliance, both containers being formed of a synthetic plastic material. The first container is arranged to be broken by external pressure, the second container has a weakened point in the wall and the containers contain different media which, in use, when mixed by the breaking of the first container produce gas in such volume as to break the second container at the weakened point and inflate the device. The media may be sodium bicarbonate and acetic acid.
