Abstract

<PICT:0997270/C4-C5/1> The continuous catalytic cracking of readily volatile hydrocarbons or mixtures thereof in externally heated tubes 1 to produce a fuel gas comprises passing a mixture of steam with only a portion of the hydrocarbon vapours to be reacted, having a mixture ratio of 3 to 7 parts by volume of steam to 1 part of hydrocarbon, through a preliminary cracking zone 2 in the tube 1 and subsequently converting the resultant water gas in a principal cracking zone 3 after the addition of the residual hydrocarbon vapours. Preferably, 50 to 65% of the total hydrocarbons are reacted in the zone 2 and the reactions may be performed at 3 to 15 atmospheres pressure. The hydrocarbons may be natural gas, light petrol, or the propane/butane mixture obtained from petroleum gas. Each tube 1 has a tubular insert 4 which may extend through the zone 2 only, or through both zones, catalyst being disposed in the annular spaces so formed. The residual hydrocarbons are delivered through a tube 6 to a mixing zone 7, the insert 4 being suitably slotted or perforated if it extends through the zone 3, which in this case may be provided with a helical baffle 8.
