Abstract

997,138. Packaging; boxes. CONTINENTAL AVIATION & ENGINEERING CORPORATION. Nov. 15, 1963, No. 45131/63. Headings B8C and B8P. A method of packaging comprises introducing a rigid-setting liquid plastic foam into a container to form an article support therein, placing an article on this support when the plastic is in a condition to be moulded by the article, placing at least one parting element around or adjacent the article and introducing further rigid-setting plastic foam to fill the remaining space in the container and to cover the article while allowing a portion of the parting element to extend outside the plastic material. In a preferred embodiment the container is made of corrugated cardboard or weatherproof hardboard and comprises a base 10 provided with hollow legs 15 and corner posts 17 and a tubular sleeve 23 which is slid on to the base 10. The base is filled with liquid plastic foam such as polyurethane which enters legs 15, Fig. 8, through cut-outs in the base bottom to strengthen them sufficiently for stacking and fork-lifting operations. The article 18 is preferably enclosed in two complete wrappers 19, 20 of paper or the like and the parting element is a wire 21 which is wound round the article between the wrappers. The ends 22 of the wire are led out from wrapper 20 and are accessible after the article has been placed on the foam support and subsequently encased in foam either as shown in Fig. 4 or by attaching the ends to flaps 25 of sleeve 23. The surfaces of the container which contact the plastic foam are preferably waxed or otherwise treated to prevent adhesion of the foam although adhesion occurs between the foam and wrapper 20. To unpack the article, sleeve 23 is removed and the plastic foam is cut in two by pulling the wire outwardly and around the article. The wire may be heated to assist the cutting, Further embodiments provide channels between the legs 15 which communicate with the base bottom and reinforce the base when filled, an alternative opening device comprising two perforated sheets 34, Fig. 12, which when separated slice the foam block, and the packaging of an article between two polyethylene bags filled with liquid plastic foam (Fig. 10, not shown), also the foam may be allowed to adhere to the container and the wire arranged to cut the container and foam. The package, which is reusable and has a high buoyancy factor, may be weatherproofed by externally coating the container or by painting the foam block.
