Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:0997036/C2/1> and its acid addition salts wherein A is a straight or branched alkylene chain containing from 2 to 6 carbon atoms, and R is a straight or branched alkyl group containing from 1 to 12 carbon atoms or is a benzyl group and the preparation thereof (a) by reacting a 9-X-acridine or a salt thereof wherein X is a halogen atom, an aryloxy, an alkoxy, an arylmercapto or an alkylmercapto group with a 1-R-4-(o -aminoalkyl) piperazine or a salt thereof, or (b) by reacting 9-amino-acridine or a salt thereof with a 1-R-4-(o -X-alkyl) piperazine or a salt thereof wherein X is a halogen atom, or (c) by reacting a 9-(o -X-alkylamino) acridine or a salt thereof with a 1-R-piperazine or a salt thereof wherein X is a halogen atom, or (d) by reacting a 9-(o -haloalkylamido) acridine or a salt thereof with a 1-R-piperazine or a salt thereof and reducing the product so formed. The compounds may also be prepared by alkylating a benzylating a 9-[o -(piperazin-1-yl) alkylamino] acridine or a salt thereof. 1 - R - 4 - (o - aminoalkyl) - piperazines are prepared by reacting a 1-R-piperazine with a N-o -bromoalkylphthalimide to give a 1-R-4-(o -phthalimidoalkyl) -piperazine and reacting this with hydrazine. 1-(3-Aminopropyl)-4-methyl-, -4-ethyl-, and -4-butyl-piperazine are prepared by reacting a 1-alkylpiperazine with acrylonitrile to give 1-(2-cyanoethyl)-4-methyl-, -4-ethyl- and -4-butyl-piperazine and reducing the cyano group. Pharmaceutical compositions, useful as anthelmintics, comprise the compounds of the invention and an acceptable carrier therefor. The compositions may be in the form of powders, granules, capsules, cachets, tablets, suspensions emulsions. The compounds may also be mixed with the food of an animal to be treated.
