Abstract

Ethylenically unsaturated monomers are emulsion polymerized in the presence of an emulsifier-stabilizer system comprising lithium hydroxide, a C12- 24 fatty acid and a copolymer of a vinyl monomer and the anhydride of an unsaturated dibasic acid. The monomers may be styrene, a styrene (6.03 parts) -butadiene (14.2 parts) mixture or a styrene-isoprene mixture. The fatty acid may be oleic acid used at a concentration of 0.5-10% and the ratio of oleic acid : copolymer may be 1 : 1. The copolymer may be a styrene/maleic anhydride copolymer. Sufficient lithium hydroxide may be used to maintain the pH at a value greater than 9. Polymerization may be carried out in the presence of tertiary dodecyl mercaptan, using ammonium persulphate or di-isopropylbenzene hydroperoxide as initiator.
