Abstract
995,904. Hydro-pneumatic shock absorbers. GIRLING Ltd. Jan. 11, 1963 [Jan. 31, 1962], No. 3594/62. Heading F2S. A direct - acting telescopic damper comprises a liquid - filled cylinder 10 closed at one end 13 and accommodating a doubleacting valved piston 19 with a piston rod 21 projecting through a seal 22 at the other end of the cylinder, a floating piston 23, a diaphragm, between the piston 19 and the closed end 13 of the cylinder, and a reservoir 12 partly or wholly surrounding the working cylinder 10 and in communication, through a port 25, with its closed end, the reservoir containing liquid and a volume of air, or other gas, under pressure. The reservoir 12 is formed by the annular space between the cylinder 10 and an outer cylinder 11 the upper end of which is reduced at 15 and secured, e.g. by welding, in pressure-tight manner to the cylinder 10. The gas in the cylinder 11 is preferably confined in a flexible bag 26 provided with individual longitudinal cells. The lower ends of the two cylinders 10, 11 are closed by a cup-shaped pressing 13 the upper seal 22 being located between a plug 16 which closes that end of the cylinder 10 and a screw-cap 18.
