Abstract

995,650. Fourdrinier paper-making machines; woven fabrics; yarns. HUYCK CORPORATION. April 10, 1962 [Dec. 14, 1961], No. 13730/62. Headings D1K, D1W and D2A. The wire-cloth of a paper-making machine is supported over some of the de-watering devices by an open-mesh belt woven from one or more synthetic fibre materials. Prefered materials for the belts are nylons 6, 6-6, 6-10, 11, polyethylene terephthalate and polyethylene. These may be used as monofilaments or multi-filament yarns and may be coated with nylon. Staple fibre yarns of plied or cabled construction may also be used and the belts may be made of yarns of the same or different materials or of the same or different constructions in warp or weft. Fabrics for the belts are preferably woven endless and may then be cut tranversely and the ends joined after installation by sewing, lacing, or adhesives or by loops or metal clips arranged to receive pintles to form hinged joints. Before installation the fabrics may be stabilized by heat setting or by materials that react with or coat, or both, some or all of the fibres. Aldehyde resins are mentioned as suitable stabilizing materials. The Fourdrinier screens themselves may be woven from metal wire or combinations of metal, and synthetic fibre yarns, synthetic fabrics for both screens and belts being preferred. The belts have a coarser mesh than the screens. The transverse threads of the belt are arranged to bend about the longitudinal threads so that it is the former that receive the main abrasive wear while the latter take tensile strains. Suction box tops may be made of stainless steel and it is stated that the screens may be shorter than would be permissible without belts. The belt may extend under the screen above the suction boxes 40 and be guided by rolls 54, 56, 58, 60 and edge sensing paddles 61. In alternative forms, the belt may extend over suction boxes 40 and couch roll 14, over suction boxes, couch roll and some table rolls 36, or over all members traversed by the screen 10. In all the alternative forms, the belt is driven from the couch roll but in the first form is driven by the screen. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 901, 772.
