Abstract
995,593. Gas chromatography. BODENSEEWERK PERKIN-ELMER and CO. G.m.b.H. Sept. 24, 1963 [Oct. 20, 1962], No. 37542/63. Heading B1L. A stream splitter for placing between the sampler and the column in a gas chromatography apparatus comprises a branch line which by-passes the column and contains a throttling member ad wherein the throttling member is preceded by an absorbent for the sample in the carrier gas so that only pure carrier gas reaches the throttling member. In a specifice embodiment, Fig. 1, carrier gas 10 receives a sample at 12 and part of the gaseous mixture proceeds to the column 16 and detector whilst the remainder goes along line 20. The sample in the carrier gas is adsorbed by charcoal at 22 and the pure carrier gas passes through needle valve 24 to outlet 26. The theory of the device is said to be, that the throttling member may be set to such a position as to give a known splitting ratio of the gas stream when using pure carrier gas and when subsequently a gas mixture is used, the same splitting ratio is obtained because only pure carrier gas reaches the throttling member. The device may be used advantageously with capillary columns.
