Abstract
A water-soluble resin composition consists of (a) a methylol melamine, which is etherified with one or more alcohols which contain at least 2 carbon atoms and are at least partially miscible with water or with a mixture thereof with not more than 80% by weight of methanol, and which is miscible with water at least in the ratio 1 : 1 by weight; (b) a fatty acid modified alkyd resin having an acid value of 15 to 60 and a hydroxyl value of 75 to 180, the ratio of (a) : (b) being from 1 : 4 to 4 : 1 by weight; (c) an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic tertiary amine; and (d) up to 45% by weight of (a) + (b) of a solvent which is compatible with the resins and miscible with water. In the example (a) is derived from melamine, paraformaldehyde, ethylene glycol monobutyl ether and methanol in the molar ratio 1 : 4 : 2 : 5; (b) is an alkyd resin based on phthalic acid, glycerol and trimethylol propane and contains 24% dehydrated caster oil fatty acids; (c) is triethylamine and (d) is ethylene glycol monobutyl ether and water. The resulting composition is spread on a glass plate, aired and stoved. The compositions may be used for stoving lacquers and varnishes and for the impregnation of textile materials and paper, e.g. the surface sheets of laminates.ALSO:A water soluble resin composition consists of (a) a methylol melamine, which is etherified with one or more alcohols which contain at least 2 carbon atoms and are at least partially miscible with water or with a mixture thereof with not more than 80% by weight of methanol, and which is miscible with water at least in the ratio 1:1 by weight, (b) a fatty acid modified alkyd resin having an acid value of 15-60 and a hydroxyl value of 75-180, the ratio of (a):(b) being from 1:4 to 4:1 by weight; (c) an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic tertiary amine; and (d) up to 45% by weight of (a)+(b) of a solvent which is compatible with the resins and miscible with water. In the example, (a) is derived from melamine, paraformaldehyde, ethylene glycol monobutyl ether and methanol in the molar ratio 1:4:2:5; (b) is an alkyd resin based on phthalic acid, glycerol and trimethylol propene and contains 24+ dehydrated castor oil fatty acids; (c) is triethylamine and (d) is ethylene glycol monobutyl ether and water. The resulting composition is spread on a glass plate, aired and stoved.
