A drive system for the movable table 50 of a hydraulic press comprises at least two piston- and-cylinder groups 70, 74 and 72, 76, at least one of which is releasably connectable to the table by means of a locking device 80, 81. The device consists of a pair of arcuate segments which are pivotally mounted on pins 82, 83 on the table and have toothed segments 84, 85 engaging a screw 86 by means of which the arcuate segments can be engaged with, or disengaged from, a groove 94 in the piston 76. When the segments are engaged with the groove, both piston-and-cylinder groups are effective to move the table which, as described in Specifications 994,983 and 994,984, is secured to a boxlike structure 52, 54 having internal surfaces 56, 58 co-operating with guide surfaces 48 on a bracket formed by the plates 16, 18 of an archshaped structure B bolted to uprights 34, the latter also providing guide surfaces for the structure 52, 54. When the arcuate segments are disengaged from the groove, the piston-andcylinder 72, 76 can be operated independently of the piston-and-cylinder 70, 74.
