Abstract
A shaped semi-conductive pulley or bandliner for an electrostatic clutch of the Johnsen-Rahbek type (see Division Hl), is composed of partially carbonized polymeric organic material, e.g. furfuryl alcohol, but preferably consisting of regenerated cellulosic or hemicellulosic material. An electrical resistivity of 105-108 ohm cm. with a carbon content of more than 80% by weight is preferred. This material is formed by pulping wheat staw in water, removing part of the water by centrifuging, forming into the desired shape by moulding, drying by vacuum and heating, and then heating in one or more stages in nitrogen at 100 atmospheres slowly to 400-600 DEG C. while the pressure is raised to 360 atmospheres and maintained for 8 hours. A lubricant such as talc, molybdenum disulphide, P.T.F.E. or polyethylene may be incorporated in the cellulosic pulp before drying.
