For repair and maintenance of the digging unit 6, 5, 7, 71, 8, 9 of an underwater digging machine the unit is withdrawn into a tubular chamber 3 within the crew and machinery housing 1 of the machine and the chamber is sealed off by a slide valve 15 and pumped out so that access to the unit in the chamber may be had through an inspection cover 17. The unit can be advanced and retracted in the chamber by water pressure on a piston 4 in the chamber, the piston forming a bearing for the drive shaft of the unit. A winch-controlled guide tube is pivotally supported on the housing 1 at the exit of the chamber 3.
