Abstract
Alcohols RfCH2CH2OH, where Rf is C1-20 perfluoroalkyl or perfluorocycloakyl, are prepared by reacting Rf CH2CH2I with oleum at a temperature such that at least one of the reactants is liquid, and heating the resulting RgCH2CH2OSO2OH with aqueous sulphuric acid, e.g. by diluting the initial reaction mixture with water and heating. The sulphates (RfCH2CH2O)2SO2 may be obtained as by-products. Specifications 867,279 and 899,657 are referred to.
