994,450. Evaporation of liquids ; dielectric heating. R. G. SARGEANT. Sept. 7, 1962, No. 34316/62. Heading B1B. [Also in Division H5] Water is removed by evaporation from liquid mixtures, e.g. fruit juices or mixtures of water with hydrocarbon and other oils and liquid fuels, by use of dielectric heating. As shown, citrus juices are passed through a centrifuge 1 to separate the water-containing portion at 1a from the ester-carrying portion at 15. The former portion is then pumped, via pipes 1b, 2a, through a dielectric heating arrangement 3 (see Division H5), and then through a spray head 10a which directs the liquid into contact with the walls of evaporating chamber 10. Steam-operated air ejectors 5, 5<SP>1</SP> draw vapours from chamber 10 through condensers 4, 17, condensate being removed by pump 6, and maintain a high vacuum in chamber 10 such that water evaporates at 70 ‹F. Refrigerating gas is supplied to condenser 4 by a compressor. Water from the condenser (not shown) of the refrigeration system is passed through condenser coil 17a and is then used to heat the walls of chamber 10. The dielectric heating arrangement 3 may alternatively project into chamber 10 and replace spray 10a, Figs. 8, 9 (not shown).
