Abstract

994,082. Radio navigation. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. Nov. 14, 1961 [Nov. 18, 1960], No. 40769/61. Heading H4D. In a radio navigation system an artificial satellite carries a stable clock 1, Fig. 1, controlling a modulator 2 of a radio transmitter 3 to emit signals at predetermined times and the vehicle or craft (e.g. a ship) wishing to determine its own position carries a receiver 4, a clock 5 producing signals in synchronism with those of clock 1, and a phase-comparator 6. In one embodiment, transmitter 3 emits groups of four pulses, Fig. 3, separated by different time intervals to assist indentification. The received pulses are shifted by a time interval T 0 from the local clock pulses and the distance to the satellite at the instant considered is thus determined by measuring T 0 . Known tables are used for providing the instantaneous co-ordinates of the satellite. The time interval measurement is repeated on all pulses which occur when the satellite passes in sight of the ship. To eliminate ambiguity in determining the ship's position, two vertical receiving aerials spaced #/2 apart are provided.
