Abstract

993,842. Bearings. GLACIER METAL CO. Ltd. Oct. 10, 1961 [Oct. 10, 1960], No. 34705/60. Heading F2A. In a plain bearing assembly, excess lubricating oil is delivered from one region of clearance space to another to inhibit transverse vibration of a journal relatively to an outer bearing member. In an embodiment, the journal 1 is in a housing formed of upper and lower members 2, 3 and the clearance between the journal and the housing is connected by conduits 4 which serve as a restricted flow path for the lubricant and which connect to a restrictor 7. The housing has axially-spaced annular recesses 8 therein with an annular oil-groove 9 therebetween which receives oil through a port 11 in the housing. The lower member 3 has a pair of axially-spaced oil-grooves 12 which are connected, via passages 14, to a relief valve 13 which releases any excess pressure developed in the bearing. In use, when the journal vibrates the oil is forced through the restrictor 7 and energy is absorbed so that the vibration of the journal is damped. The recesses 8 serve as oil reservoirs and also allow a flow of oil from a decreasing clearance space to an increasing clearance space. In another embodiment, the inner bearing surface of the housing is in the form of a pair of spiral surfaces, each extending angularly through 180 degrees and each of which begins and ends at a step, the steps being diametrically opposed and positioned in the plane of the joint faces. Specifications 877,233 and 919,480 are referred to.
