Abstract

Alcohols are prepared by hydrolysing in a continuous or batchwise process an alkoxide or an aralkoxide of a Group II or III metal using an aqueous solution of sulphuric acid with a strength not greater than 30% by weight in the presence of a surface-active agent. If the process is continuous the strength of the acid used may be increased to 35%. The preferred starting materials are the alkoxides and aralkoxides of aluminium, particularly those alkoxides containing 6-40 carbon atoms. A particularly suitable alkoxide is one prepared from a metal alkyl derived from an olefin obtained by the thermal or catalytic cracking of hydrocarbon feedstock such as that produced in the refining of crude petroleum oils. The metal alkoxides and aralkoxides used as starting materials may be obtained by reacting the corresponding metal alkyl or aralkyl with oxygen. Before hydrolysis the alkoxide or aralkoxide may be dissolved in a solvent, for example an ether or a hydrocarbon. Suitable surface-active agents may be anionic, cationic or nonionic. Particularly suitable surface active agents are condensation products of an alkylene oxide with a phenol or an alcohol, salts of alkyl aryl sulphonic acid, primary, secondary and tertiary amine salts, quaternary ammonium compounds and other nitrogenous bases such as guanidine and thiuronium salts. The preferred amount of surface active agent used is from 0.01 to 0.3% by weight based on the total quantity of aqueous acid. Specifications 763,081, 763,824, 770,707, 794,359 and 804,355 also are referred to.
