Abstract

993,285. Automatic circuit-breakers. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Nov. 8, 1962 [Nov. 15, 1961], No. 42189/62. Heading H2B. On overload a latching bimetal strip 101 heats up and flexes to allow operation of the breaker mechanism 15 via a pivoted releasable member 81, strip 101 having a bimetal strip 112, which may be lanced out, projecting normally therefrom and acted upon by an adjusting screw 105 to adjust the tripping point, over - adjustment being prevented by stops for the member 107 rotating the screw 105. Bimetal 101 is heated by a plugin heater unit 61 and is compensated for ambient temperature variation when strip 112 projects in the opposite direction from bimetal 101 (Fig. 6, not shown). An operating handle structure 77 includes a U-shaped operating lever 85, pivotally supported at 87, having two U- legs 93 receiving pins on the arms of a V-shaped contact operating member 79 connected with the releasable member 81 by an over-centre spring 83. Pins 53 on member 79 engage in elongated slots 51 of movable contact plates 47 slidable into and out of bridging engagement with fixed contacts 33, 37, and rockable for self-aligning thereon. Plates 47 complete the circuit between terminals 31, 45, and the plug-in heater unit 61 connects contacts 39, 43 in the circuit. The breaker is re-set by a detachable handle 89 and is operable manually thereby. An indicator lamp 19 is protected by a removable plastic cap 157. The breaker housing comprises four sections and has mounting brackets 23. Specification 993,284 is referred to.
