Abstract

Compositions, which when added to water may be used for cleaning metals e.g. zinc base die castings, copper or aluminium alloy surfaces, consist essentially of (a) 68-73% by weight of a hydrated borate, calculated as Na2B4O710H2O; (b) 10-20% of a polyunsaturated oil soap, calculated as cottonseed oil sodium soap; and (c) 12-17% of other wetting agents. Specified wetting agents are (i) water soluble lignosulphonates 1-4%; (ii) alkyl ethers of polyethylene glycol, containing C1-C18 alkyl groups and 2 to 20 oxyethylene groups 2-10%; (iii) polyethylene glycol tertiary dodecyl thioethers containing 6 to 18 carbon atoms in the polymethylene group 0.75-5.0%; (iv) alkyl phenoxy polyethoxyethanol containing 12 mols. of ethylene oxide 0.75-5.0%; (v) ethylene glycol monoalkyl ethers having C1-C4 alkyl groups 1.5-5.0%; and (vi) pine oil 0-0.5%. Borates used are sodium pentaborate and borax. Other polyunsaturated oil soaps used are derived from sesame and safflower oil. The preferred sodium lignosulphonate contains up to 0.4% calcium oxide by weight, up to 4.5% reducing sugars, up to 0.05% iron and about 7.4% total sulphur, this giving a pH of 6.0-7.5 in a 50% by weight solution in water. Metal surfaces are cleaned by treating at 88 DEG to 97 DEG C. and a pH of 8.7 to 8.9 with a solution of 8 to 10 ounces of the above composition dissolved in one U.S. gallon of water.
