Heading F1P [Also in Division B1] The invention comprises a steam generator provided with a hydraulic regulating system wherein inclined return lines for hydraulic fluid lead into a vertical return pipe, the vertical return pipe containing a device which serves to retard vertically flowing return fluid and convert it into a more slowly flowing layer from which air or other gas entrained in the fluid can more easily escape. As described the device is in the form of a helix which at least substantially fills the cross section of the vertical return pipe and extends from above the point where the highest return line leads into the return pipe to the bottom of the return pipe. As shown in Fig. 1, motors 14 and 16, indirectly controlling via pilot valves 26 and 28 a steam generator (not shown) via linkage 42 and valve 43, are supplied via line 38 with oil from sump 12. Upon sudden changes in operating conditions, oil, containing entrained air is discharged from the motors into inclined return lines 44 and 48 leading to vertical return pipe 10 in which the oil flows down the helix thus allowing the entrained air to escape. The oil flows into sump 12 which is vented at 68.
